Is the ACS seems abandoning its 30-year crusade against tobacco harm reduction?
“This is the first time the American Cancer Society has acknowledged that dip and chew products don’t cause cancer” Dr. Brad Rodu told radio host Lars Larson in a recent interview on Larson’s nationally syndicated show. The topic was a recent American Cancer Society (ACS) paper that identified 17 risk factors for cancer that can be modified, with cigarette smoking listed as the primary cause. Dr. Rodu pointed out that smokeless tobacco products are not included among those risk factors.
Dr. Rodu notes “the long-standing reluctance by American health authorities to consider the different risks provided by smoking tobacco and smoke-free tobacco on the very low end,” emphasizing that “it is the smoke that causes the cancers, heart disease, stroke, and emphysema. If you switch to a smoke-free delivery system – that is, vapor or smokeless you eliminate all the smoke and all those thousands of toxic chemicals that cause the disease.”
The Lars Larson Show is nationally syndicated and broadcast live over KXL-FM Portland, OR
